HB 1172 What Does is it Mean to You?
After July 1, 2008, HB 1172 will be in effect, HOWEVER;
Dental Hygienists and Dental Assistants will NOT be
able to perform the newly delegated duties of HB1172 UNTIL
the Indiana State Board of Dentistry establishes rules and
regulations.
Rules and regulations can be a lengthy
process which includes research into:
- Budget approval by the IPLA;
- Board approved course training for ALL
newly delegated duties for dental hygienists and dental
assistants;
- Board approval process for dental
hygienists that hold a current, active local anesthetic
permit from another state.
How will this affect the
DENTAL HYGIENIST?
Once the rules and regulations are established:
- Administer local anesthesia under direct
supervision of a dentist
- Practice under prescriptive supervision
in**:
- Public health settings;
- Fixed charitable dental clinics;
- Correctional institution;
- Prescriptive supervision is NOT allowed
in private practice settings;
- Prescriptions are valid for 45 days.
** The Indiana State Board of Dentistry must
approve the facility requesting to utilize prescriptive
supervision.
How will this affect the
DENTAL ASSISTANT?
The new law recognizes and defines dental
assistant.
The law will allow dental assistants to:
- Coronal polish and apply fluoride for
caries prevention under direct supervision of a dentist;
- Take intra oral impressions for the
fabrication of an appliance that is not for a FINAL
prosthetic appliance.
