PROFESSIONAL LIABILITY INSURANCE – HAVE IT?
IF NOT, GET IT!
Many hygienists are at risk of being sued for malpractice. You
think you are protected under the dentist’s policy, but that
isn’t necessarily true. You may be sued as an individual or
the sum of the suit may be greater than the dentist’s coverage
and you may be sued for the balance.
“My Dentist Says I’m Covered Under His Policy.”
Have you seen the policy? Have you spoken with a
representative from the company? Does the policy state that
you, as an individual, are protected? Most policies protect
the dentist against a suit resulting from actions by the
hygienist, but do not protect the hygienist as an individual.
Insurance Options
Insurance companies offer many options. All policies are
limited in the maximum amount they will pay per occurrence,
and there is a maximum amount paid during the policy period.
Some policies offer personal injury protection, such as
slander or a HIPPA violation. Some policies cover loss of
wages and travel expenses during a trial. Also covered in some
policies are legal representation expenses.
Individual Requirements
In the future, certain dental hygiene services may become
legal in Indiana, such as the administration of local
anesthesia and nitrous oxide. At that time, individual
insurance may be a requirement. If you volunteer at a dental
clinic or at a health fair, are you insured? Who is insuring
you? You may be required to provide proof of your own
malpractice insurance.
